Mrs. McBroom’s 8th Grade Reading Class
To the Parent(s) and Students:
I am very excited about being your student’s Reading Teacher for this year. I am coming from the Hebron Middle School. Previous to that, I have taught high school English for 25+ years. I am a Tennessee girl, growing up with family still in Jackson, TN which is between Memphis and Nashville. Your son/daughter will notice my Tennessee accent quickly. My husband is the Connections Pastor at Little Flock Baptist Church. We have two daughters: Hannah who is 24 and is a High School Girls Youth Minister in Jackson, TN and Rachel who is 26 and is a first grade teacher in Harlan, Kentucky. She has been married for less than a year to my son-in-law Michael.
Important: Log in to the infinite campus. Get familiar with all the helps it can offer. I will have your son/daughter access this occasionally in order to keep tabs on their grades. You will be able to monitor your child’s grades as soon as I post them. Other very helpful information can be accessed through Infinite Campus, and I can contact you in the same way I can email you. Alerts can also be sent to your phone as soon as I post grades (look around the site when you log in). As your child reaches the high school years, I believe this needs to be passed on to him/her, but at this point, many of you still want to keep a close tab on grades: good idea. Teach him/her the importance of keeping track by using Infinite Campus.

In Reading class we will be reading four awesome novels. The first of these is Unbroken, the true story of Louis Zamperini. The following is a link to the 8th grade Reading standards that we will be covering this year:
Kentucky Reading and Writing Standards
The Grading Scale:
A-90%-100%
B-80%-89%
C-70%-79%
D-60%-69%
F-59% and below
Grading Process:
When students are absent, they will be permitted to make up missing assignments according to the guidelines in the Mt. Washington Middle School Students Handbook. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain any missing work upon their return.
CLASSROOM RULES
ORGANIZATION/SUPPLIESStudents will need Chromebooks, a writing utensil, earbuds, and a composition notebook throughout the course of the year. As eighth grade students, all students are expected to have the needed items and a charged chromebook each day. Having the needed materials is an important part of learning organizational skills.
Cheating/Plagiarism
Cheating of any kind is considered a serious offense and will not be tolerated. In the case of such an incident, the student will automatically forfeit all credit on the assignment/test and disciplinary measures may be taken.
Cheating can include borrowing another’s homework, any type of dishonesty during quizzes, tests, projects, etc. If one student loans another work, or assists with cheating both students will face consequences. Plagiarism can include copying another author’s work directly from a book or the Internet or copying from another student and calling it your own. IT DOES NOT matter that you retyped or changed some words; it is still called plagiarism and is dishonest. All will result in a zero grade for the entire assignment.
If there are any questions, my planning period is from 12:21-1:11. You can contact me at school at (502) 869-5200 or email me at [email protected].
